There will be time indoors this weekend and possibly time with out power. Here are some suggestions to keep your family busy and happily distracted during the indoor time this weekend as Hurricane Florence comes through.
- Check out Books and DVDs from the library (WRL is open this weekend as of 9/13)
- e-books FREE from wrl.org and you don’t have to leave the house!
- Kanopy – Stream movies through Williamsburg Regional Library on their new streaming platform – it is free! All library card holders can stream up to four movies per month from a collection of over 30,000 documentaries and classic and foreign films.
- Freegal Movies App With the Freegal Movies and TV app for iOS or Android mobile devices adult cardholders can stream three films or TV episodes per week.
- Bookflix – Have your kids try Bookflix – free through Williamsburg Regional Library
- FREEGAL Music Library – Have a dance party with up to three hours of music every day and download three songs per week from the Sony catalog at FREEGAL (through the WRL)
- Camp “out” in the house – you already have your supplies ready and batteries in the flashlights…why not set up a fort or a tent and have a movie night in the family room.
- GAMES! What are some of your favorite games? Monopoly, Clue, Guesstures, UNO, cards, charades. If your tired of your games head to School Crossing they have FUN and unique games…good luck picking just one!
- Write a letter! Who doesn’t love to get a letter in the mail these days!? Send one to a friend, grandparent, aunt, uncle…make someone’s day!
- Voice Over Silent Movies: Only works if you have power! Put on a family favorite movie and turn off the volume. Then have everyone take over each character or take turns and do voice overs. Start it off for the kids by making it really silly, dramatic or over the top. They will ham it up!
- Never ending story: Start a story and then have everyone take a turn adding to the story…lean towards the silly on this one.
- Would You Rather? – Obviously this may get gross really quickly but that can be fun too. Ask Would You Rather questions like “Would you rather take a bath in slime or mud?” to get some laughs. Make sure to ask them why they picked what they did – those answers are the real gold!
- Guessing Game: Grab a stack of cards and have each child take a turn guessing what the next card will be…yes, they will love it…and probably think they are psychic if they get one.
- The Sock Game – This is a simple game and great for little kids. Get on the floor with your child and simply try to take off each other’s socks! You will be surprised at the giggles you get on this one. Actually it might be fun with older kids too!
- Bake cookies or something special for a neighbor
- Draw self-portraits by looking in a mirror or draw portraits of each other.
- DANCE PARTY – just turn on the music loud and dance!!!
- Scavenger Hunt – Make up your own scavenger hunt. Having trouble coming up with your own clues then google Scavenger Hunt Clues. Be sure to have a prize at the end!
- Puzzles!! Jigsaw, crosswords, sudoku, word search…these can also be printed off the internet if you don’t have them at home.
- Rob the Bank: Take string and tie it in long lengths all over a room or taping it from side to side in a long hallway. Each child has to climb through the strings with out touching any string to grab the money bag (full of something tasty) and then has to go all the way back to the beginning with the bag to win. Once set up, grab a coffee and sit back – this could entertain them for hours.
