SUMMARY:Fresh Views of the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Fresh Views of the American Revolution\n\n\n\nDebuting October 18\, 2025 • American Revolution Museum at YorktownOctober 18\, 2025 through May 3\, 2026 \n\n\n\nPart of Admission (local residence get free admission – see here) \n\n\n\nIn honor of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution\, the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown will present the special exhibition “Fresh Views of the American Revolution” from October 18\, 2025 through May 3\, 2026. This commemorative exhibit explores America’s 250th through contemporary voices and artistic perspectives. \n\n\n\nVisitors will experience new ways of looking at the ideals and legacies of the Revolution. On view are more than a dozen original paintings by folk artist Oscar de Mejo—created for the 1976 Bicentennial and now part of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation collection—including “The Declaration of Independence\, 1776.” The exhibition will also highlight community art programs inspired by de Mejo’s work. \n\n\n\nAs John Adams reflected in 1818\, the Revolution was not only a political or military triumph but also a “radical change in the principles\, opinions\, sentiments and affection of the people.” This ongoing “living revolution” of ideas remains at the heart of Fresh Views\, encouraging audiences to consider how those principles continue to evolve today. \n\n\n\nLeading up to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration in 2026\, the museum will showcase its Bicentennial-era artworks alongside new\, responsive pieces created through contemporary artists\, community members\, and school collaborations. By placing historic and modern perspectives side by side\, the exhibition invites reflection on enduring themes of liberty\, freedom\, equality\, and revolutionary change—allowing each visitor to draw their own meaning from the American Revolution’s unfinished story. SUMMARY:‘Following the Dragon’ special exhibition
DESCRIPTION:‘Following the Dragon’ special exhibition at Jamestown Settlement Museum to explore the journey of Chinese Ming porcelain to 17th-century Jamestown\n\n\n\nJamestown-Yorktown Foundation and Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation Collaborative Exhibition Opening November 15 \n\n\n\nFrom palaces to palisades\, take a journey of discovery in “Following the Dragon: Chinese Ming Porcelain in Early Jamestown\,” a special exhibition at Jamestown Settlement\, a museum of 17th-century Virginia history and culture\, debuting on November 15\, through July 12\, 2026. \n\n\n\nPresented by the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation in partnership with the Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation\, the joint special exhibition of Chinese Ming porcelain uncovered archaeologically at James Fort reveals unexpected cultural connections that link colonial Virginia with imperial China\, spanning continents and empires. \n\n\n\nFeaturing Chinese porcelain uncovered during excavations of the 1607-1625 James Fort at Historic Jamestowne\, the exhibition examines who may have owned these evocative pieces\, how they may have been acquired\, and offers fresh insights into the social life of the early 17th-century Virginia elite. \n\n\n\nMore than 100 Chinese Ming porcelain vessels have been discovered during archaeological excavations of the 1607-1625 fort at Historic Jamestowne. For this exhibition\, a total of 31 vessels recovered during Jamestown Rediscovery excavations will be paired with intact parallels from English\, Dutch and American museums\, as well as private collections from across the globe. \n\n\n\nThe early Jamestown colony has long been overshadowed by historical accounts depicting a muddy\, military settlement rife with bouts of starvation\, disease and high mortality. Archaeological discoveries of Chinese porcelain vessels by Jamestown Rediscovery in James Fort provide new insights to life in 17th-century Virginia. The exhibition explores how this struggling isolated outpost would house the most exquisite and expensive ceramic of its time. \n\n\n\nChinese porcelain\, regarded as “white gold\,” was seen as an exotic ware from the East that was difficult to obtain\, making it a rarity that was usually associated in England with royal and upper-class households. As early Jamestown colonists sought to display their global awareness and social status\, Ming porcelain became prized possessions among Virginia’s elite. \n\n\n\nUNIQUE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN TWO PROMINENT HISTORICAL INSTITUTIONS \n\n\n\nThe joint exhibition was developed in collaboration between Jamestown Settlement Senior Curator Beverly “Bly” Straube\, Ph.D.\, FSA\, and Jamestown Rediscovery Senior Curator Merry Outlaw\, and was inspired by the remarkable discoveries of….more info: jyfmuseums.org/following-the-dragon.

SUMMARY:The Weight of Liberty
DESCRIPTION:The Weight of Liberty\n\n\n\nMilitary Encampment \n\n\n\nThe roar of cannon fire dominated the battlefields of the American Revolution. As early as 1775\, artillerists trained on the exercise of “Great Guns” in Williamsburg\, first under the command of Captain James Innes. The enormous weight and importance of these cannons cannot be understood without having pulled one yourself. Assist soldiers of the 2nd Virginia Regiment and serve as a matross as they haul a “great gun” into position in front of the Public Magazine. Recruits will be trained in the loading and firing of a cannon\, followed by a firing demonstration by the soldiers of the 2nd Virginia. \n\n\n\nThis program is hands-on\, interactive\, and open to all willing recruits ages 6 to 80. Guests must be able to stand for approximately 30 minutes. CW Admission More Info
