SUMMARY:Black Artist Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Black Artist Showcase at Jamestown Settlement Event Details:\n\n\n\nJamestown Settlement will exhibit the Black Artist Showcase in celebration of Black History Month and beyond\, February 1 – March 29\, 2026\, connecting the past and present through vivid intersections of contemporary art and 17th-century history. \n\n\n\n‘Raise Your Voices: Sounds of Protest’\n\n\n\nThroughout American history\, Black Americans have used the arts to express their hopes for the future. In a 1774 letter\, the enslaved poet Phillis Wheatley expressed that the principle of deliverance “…lives in us. God grant Deliverance in his own Way and Time.” In recognition of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026\, the Black Artist Showcase theme “Raise Your Voices: Sounds of Protest” continues Wheatley’s legacy\, and contemporary Virginia artists will exhibit their perspectives through various art mediums. \n\n\n\nThe Black Artist Showcase is included with admission to Jamestown Settlement. \n\n\n\nAfter Angelo \n\n\n\nBlack History Month programs culminate with “After Angelo\,” a special afternoon event on February 21\, 2026 named for one of the first African women named in Jamestown’s historical record\, celebrating modern African American life and culture through art\, performance and community conversation. \n\n\n\nResidents of James City County\, York County and the City of Williamsburg enjoy free admission every day at Jamestown Settlement & the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. SUMMARY:Fresh Views of the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Fresh Views of the American Revolution\n\n\n\nDebuting October 18\, 2025 • American Revolution Museum at YorktownOctober 18\, 2025 through May 3\, 2026 \n\n\n\nPart of Admission (local residence get free admission – see here) \n\n\n\nIn honor of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution\, the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown will present the special exhibition “Fresh Views of the American Revolution” from October 18\, 2025 through May 3\, 2026. This commemorative exhibit explores America’s 250th through contemporary voices and artistic perspectives. \n\n\n\nVisitors will experience new ways of looking at the ideals and legacies of the Revolution. On view are more than a dozen original paintings by folk artist Oscar de Mejo—created for the 1976 Bicentennial and now part of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation collection—including “The Declaration of Independence\, 1776.” The exhibition will also highlight community art programs inspired by de Mejo’s work. \n\n\n\nAs John Adams reflected in 1818\, the Revolution was not only a political or military triumph but also a “radical change in the principles\, opinions\, sentiments and affection of the people.” This ongoing “living revolution” of ideas remains at the heart of Fresh Views\, encouraging audiences to consider how those principles continue to evolve today. \n\n\n\nLeading up to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration in 2026\, the museum will showcase its Bicentennial-era artworks alongside new\, responsive pieces created through contemporary artists\, community members\, and school collaborations. By placing historic and modern perspectives side by side\, the exhibition invites reflection on enduring themes of liberty\, freedom\, equality\, and revolutionary change—allowing each visitor to draw their own meaning from the American Revolution’s unfinished story. SUMMARY:Williamsburg: The Story of a Patriot
DESCRIPTION:Williamsburg: The Story of a Patriot\n\n\n\n📅Fridays – Tuesdays (Jan. – May)🕞10 AM – 10:37 AM\, 11 AM – 11:37 AM\, 3 PM – 3:37 PM\, 4 PM – 4:37 PM📍Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center \n\n\n\nWilliamsburg: The Story of a Patriot brings to life the pivotal moment in May 1776 when Virginia’s political leaders–among them Thomas Jefferson\, Patrick Henry\, and George Washington–debated the future of the colony and ultimately chose the bold path toward independence. Their decision risked everything as Virginia moved from a British colony to a Commonwealth within the emerging United States. The story is told through the eyes of John Fry\, a fictional Virginia planter portrayed by Jack Lord\, who is elected to the House of Burgesses and witnesses Virginia’s essential role in the fight for independence. When first released\, the film broke new ground by using cutting-edge technology\, including Paramount Studios’ VistaVision cameras and Todd-AO six-channel sound\, to immerse visitors in the places and moments they would encounter throughout Colonial Williamsburg. SUMMARY:The Weight of Liberty
DESCRIPTION:The Weight of Liberty\n\n\n\nMilitary Encampment \n\n\n\nThe roar of cannon fire dominated the battlefields of the American Revolution. As early as 1775\, artillerists trained on the exercise of “Great Guns” in Williamsburg\, first under the command of Captain James Innes. The enormous weight and importance of these cannons cannot be understood without having pulled one yourself. Assist soldiers of the 2nd Virginia Regiment and serve as a matross as they haul a “great gun” into position in front of the Public Magazine. Recruits will be trained in the loading and firing of a cannon\, followed by a firing demonstration by the soldiers of the 2nd Virginia. \n\n\n\nThis program is hands-on\, interactive\, and open to all willing recruits ages 6 to 80. Guests must be able to stand for approximately 30 minutes. CW Admission or Good Neighbor Pass More Info
