- The Getaway Cafe is a new monthly program for adults with early memory loss and their care partners (a family member or friend).
- Each event will feature a different general theme and numerous activities based around that theme, including short presentations, small group discussion sessions, interactive components, and visits from other organizations within the community.
- The first session, “Presidential Pets,” will take place January 19 and will feature a talk on the famous four-legged inhabitants of the White House and some quality time with therapy dogs from K9 Connection.
Williamsburg Regional Library is inviting users to escape to the Getaway Cafe — a new program for adults with early memory loss and their care partners that offers an afternoon of new experiences, connections, and great conversation.
The series, which is patterned after the “Memory Cafe” concept popularized by the Alzheimer’s Association, was created in response to a perceived need in the community for enjoyable, stimulating experiences for adults living with memory loss. It is not a respite or support group, but rather an event aimed at allowing participants to engage with other people in their situation in a pleasant, comfortable environment. Individuals with memory loss and their care partner — a family member, friend, or other caregiver — must attend together.
The Getaway Cafe will take place the third Friday of every month at the James City County Library, and each month’s event will feature a different theme — broad categories, like art, music, and movement, that promote wellness and inspire conversation . The afternoon will include numerous different activities, all based around the day’s theme, such as short presentations, small group discussion sessions, and other interactive components.
The series kicks off on January 19 with a celebration of all our animal companions. The program will begin with a talk on “Presidential Pets,” a brief and entertaining look at the famous four-legged friends that have inhabited the White House over the years. After that, attendees will break out into small groups to reminisce about their own favorite pet memories and to flip through some interesting and adorable animal photos we’ll have on hand. Finally, the day will conclude with a visit from K9 Connection Therapy Dogs, and participants will have the chance to spend some quality time with these lovable pups.
“We really want this program to be a multi-sensory experience that engages our participants in conversation, recollection, and making connections with one another,” said mobile library services manager Barbara Jones, who has spearheaded the planning of the series. “It’s going to be a really fun time, and what better way to begin than with a program all about pets and a visit from man’s best friend.”
