Here is a great article from Park Ranger John Gresham explaining this spooky event:
In the daytime, history and culture themes are interesting enough at York River State Park. Being so close to Virginia’s Historic Triangle of Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown, we are surrounded by an engaging past from the pre-colonial era to modern times. Along with the natural beauty and amazing wildlife, people from all walks of life enjoy spending the day with us.
But, things change when the October sun goes down.
Beware of the Phantom Pirates on the Ghost Trails Hayride at York River State Park
Staff and volunteers are swept away into the dark holds of the past to re-tell bizarre stories from the region. Through the woods we find the birthplace of a young lady who was drowned for being a witch, phantom pirates in a death or death sword fight, even a ghost light of a railroad man looking for his head. Would you dare take such a journey with us at night?

Join us for the darker side of history and culture along the York River. These classic tales of the unexplained will enchant you and your family for years to come. Modern horror movie characters come and go, but these traditional ghost stories are legendary, and we invite you to experience them.
