1-64 Cameras in James City County Warning Period Begins August 14, Enforcement begins Sept. 13
The James City County Police Department will be launching a Vehicle Based Enforcement (VBE) Work Zone Safety Program in the active construction zone of I-64. James City County has received approval to install Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras within the work zones on Interstate 64. The police department will work with the vendor to install the cameras. Once the cameras are installed, there will be a 30-day warning period, during which speeding notices will be issued only as warnings. Full enforcement will begin immediately following the warning phase.
The James City County Police Department measured a dramatic increase in vehicle crashes on the section of I-64 that falls within James City County’s borders. In 2024, there were a total of 62 injuries and 4 fatalities on our section of I-64. In 2025, the number of injuries grew 85.48% to 115 injuries and 1 fatality. So far in 2026, we’ve faced 51 injuries and 1 fatality on that same stretch of roadway (VA TREDS).
Across the Commonwealth of Virginia, VBEs have been used to help reduce speeding violations and crashes in work zones to protect workers, drivers and passengers on our roadways. With VBEs in New Kent County and Wythe County alone, there has been a 75% reduction in speeding instances through work zones because of the VBEs and the community’s dedication to slowing down to save lives. We want the same for James City County’s portion of I-64.
Aug. 14 will start the initial warning period. During this warning period, violators will receive a warning in the mail marked in red advising of the violation that occurred on such date and time. Warning summonses serve as a reminder to slow down in places where lanes are narrowing, road patterns are shifting, and traffic is changing to save the lives of workers, drivers and passengers.
Live enforcement begins Sept. 13, after the 30-day warning period. Cameras attached to the VBE will be used to identify any non-compliant motorists traveling at 10 MPH or greater over the posted, enforceable speed limit. Motorists exceeding the limit will receive a civil summons in the mail. These summonses carry a $100 fine, but do not come with points against your license or insurance penalties.
Photo speed cameras will be active and enforced on days there is active construction occurring. VBE-enforced work zones will have additional road signs to give advance warnings to the driver of the upcoming photo enforced work zone.
