4th Annual Comic Convention at WRL is September 12
Williamsburg Regional Library’s free Comic Convention returns for its fourth year Saturday, September 12, bringing cosplay, comics, anime, games and fan activities to the Williamsburg Library, Stryker Center and City Square.
This year’s event explores the role of visual arts in fandom, highlighted by a comic book workshop with cartoonist and teaching artist Laura Lee Gulledge. Gulledge specializes in working with Neurodivergent youth and has worked with partner organizations such as the Kennedy Center, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Fralin Museum of Art and the Baltimore Children & Youth Fund. “WRL Comic Con vention has drawn between 600 and 900 attendees each year we’ve hosted it, which tells us there’s a real appetite for this kind of community event,” said Melissa Simpson, WRL’s director of adult services. “It gives people of all ages a place to be creative, meet others who share their interests and discover something new at the library.”
Activities include a cosplay workshop with costume designer and award-winning cosplayer Avalon Lee, anime viewing, fan trivia and a nerd spelling bee. Fans can also compete for prizes in the cosplay contest at the end of the event. Prizes will be awarded to the first, second , and third place winners in Adult/Teen, Children and Group categories. Costume contest sign-up will be available from 12:30- 2 p.m. in the Williamsburg Library Theatre Gallery.
The event is free, and no registration is required. A vendor gallery in the Stryker Center will feature local artists and vendors selling comics, games and more. The Friends of WRL Foundation will also host a used book sale, and Dominion Dogs will be on site selling food.
