“Miseries and Dangers of Soule and Bodie: Conflicts of Faith in the Early Chesapeake” Lecture
📅Sunday, March 8, 2026
🕞2 PM – 3 PM
📍York Hall
Dr. Amy Stallings never quite knows what century she’s in. By day, she works with Preservation Virginia interpreting the lives of women at Jamestown; by night, she steps into the past as a performer with Colonial Williamsburg’s historic dance ensemble. An adjunct professor at the College of William & Mary, Stallings brings history vividly to life through the story of real-life indentured servant Anne Fletcher.
Through Fletcher’s experiences, she explores the religious character of the English Chesapeake in the 1640s, asking what impact the religious and secular wars of the previous century had on ordinary people—and what challenges faced those whose faith conflicted with established authority. Fletcher’s harrowing journey sheds light on often-overlooked themes of religious dissent and intercolonial violence.
This lecture is presented by the York County Historical Committee. It is free and open to the public, though seating is limited. The event is subject to cancellation; in the event of cancellation, updates will be available on the event hotline at 757-890-3520.
