Historic Yorktown waterfront

On Sunday, May 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Historic Yorktown waterfront will come alive with creativity during the 13th Annual Art at the River Juried Art Show. Guests are invited to stroll along the scenic Riverwalk and admire (and purchase!) a diverse selection of incredible one-of-a-kind works on display and for sale—paintings, pottery, jewelry, glass arts, photography, woodwork, metal sculpture, mixed media, and much more!

Art at the River is coming for it’s 13th Annual show on Sunday May 3 at the Yorktown Riverfront

Each participating artist is thoughtfully chosen for this juried exhibition, with many traveling from Richmond and across the greater Tidewater area. Their inspiration stems from a wide range of sources, and learning the stories behind their art is as captivating as the work itself.

Around 30 captivating artists were carefully selected for this exhibition. Creators are traveling to Yorktown from the Greater Tidewater area and the Outer Banks to participate in this popular community event. Each artist draws their inspiration from a variety of sources, which are as intriguing as their artwork.

Juried Art Show prizes valued at more than $4,000 will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places, and Honorable Mention in 2D, 3D, jewelry, and photography. The highly coveted Susan H. Powell Best in Show Award is in memory of the founder of the Art at the River Juried Art Show. Susan was a dedicated volunteer who enriched many lives by promoting the arts, not just in Yorktown, but across the Peninsula. Attendees can also vote for their favorite to receive the People’s Choice Award, earning the recipient a $1,000 prize.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase throughout the day from Coastal Thirst and Boyd’s Tasty Dogs and all Historic Yorktown restaurants will be open. The Hampton Roads Winery is offering wine tastings with the option of buying a bottle to take home. Audio Portrait will perform on the Riverwalk Landing Stage from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This event will also include a Student Art Show in the Yorktown Freight Shed, featuring high school artists from York County Public Schools.

This year’s judges are John E. Ovington, Carol Anne McErlean, and Alison Pariso.

Ovington is a lifelong artist, designer, painter, photographer, carpenter, welder, mechanic, and teacher. He earned a BFA from University of North Carolina School of the Arts, School of Design & Production. He was a professional scenic artist for motion pictures, television, theater, national tours, industrials, and casino shows for 20 years. Ovington currently paints images in acrylic and casein inspired by coastal Virginia. McErlean is an award-winning artist who enjoys exploring new mediums and creative possibilities. Although her past interests included watercolors and waxwork, she is currently producing sustainable art – or paper art – in which she recycles, repurposes, and recreates working with archived watercolors.

Pariso, who will serve as the Student Art Show judge, is the owner of Pariso Art, a school offering art classes and exhibitions for youth of all ages. She graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2013 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking. Pariso is passionate about teaching how to make art that is relevant and unique to each individual and always encourages her students to express themselves through a creative outlet and to explore many different artistic mediums.
