Based on his newly released book, award-winning historian Jonathan White tells the true story of swashbuckling sea captain Appleton Oaksmith and the murky and dangerous world of blockade-running and slave-trading during the Civil War. He depicts the extraordinary measures the Lincoln Administration took to destroy the illegal transatlantic slave trade. 

Christopher Newport University Professor White is the author of many books and articles on Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War and winner of the Gilder-Lehner Lincoln Prize for 2023. Some of his recent works will be available for sale and signing following the lecture.
