“Scottish songs, when sung in the genuine manner, must affect the heart of every person of feeling.” – attributed to William Tytler, 1790
In the 1770s, Williamsburg’s citizens developed a growing fascination with the folk music of Scotland. These pastoral songs, filled with longing and hope, offered a comforting vision of peace during a turbulent decade.
Join members of the Governor’s Musick ensemble for an evening exploring the Scottish melodies that were once sold, taught, and performed in 18th-century Williamsburg, and experience the timeless beauty of these beloved tunes.
