The Marquis de Lafayette was a young French aristocrat who volunteered his own time and fortune to help the fledgling United States fight for independence. He joined the staff of George Washington and served alongside him in key early battles, including Brandywine, Barren Hill, and Monmouth. In 1781, Washington entrusted Lafayette with command of the newly formed Light Infantry Division, where he played a crucial role in the campaign against Benedict Arnold, General Phillips, and ultimately Lord Cornwallis—a campaign that culminated at Yorktown in October 1781 and marked the beginning of the end of the American Revolution. Guests are invited to explore this pivotal chapter of history and the extraordinary role Lafayette played in shaping it. Admission to Colonial Williamsburg is required.
