Jamestown-Scotland Ferry a delightful trip across the James

If you are looking for an alternative route to crossing the James (River) – this is it. Far from the hustle and bustle of the highway, the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry crosses the James River in about 20 minutes between James City County and Surry County, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year including holidays….and it’s free.

It isn’t just one ferry but four that constitute the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry fleet, all with appropriate names. The Williamsburg, built in 1983, can carry 50 cars; the Pocahontas, built in 1995, can carry 70 cars; the Powhatan, built in 2019, can carry 70 cars and the Surry, built in 1979, can carry 50 cars.

It just celebrated its 100th anniversary in February 2025. Since the first ferry carried 16 Model T Fords, a few showed up for the anniversary. You can read more about the history of the Jamestown Scotland Ferry.
