Natural Playground at James City County Library

The Natural Playground at the James City County Library is a one-of-a kind space designed to inspire imaginative and encourage nature-based play. The playground is for everyone – kids, teenagers, parents, grandparents.

Blending classic playground favorites with natural elements, kids can enjoy a slide, play caves, sandbox, and a story trail with interactive musical features. The space also includes native plants, butterfly and bird houses, shaded seating areas, a gazebo, and picnic tables – making it just as inviting for relaxation as it is for play.

The playground officially opened in April 2026, but the idea has been years in the making. Discussion and planning began in 2018 after Betsy Fowler, former directory of the Williamsburg Regional Library, was inspired by an article about natural playgrounds. The project was brought to life by nationally acclaimed designer Ron King of the Natural Playgrounds Company with support from numerous local individuals, organizations and businesses.

The playground is open during library hours. Animals, except service animals, are prohibited. James City County Library is located at 7770 Croaker Road, Williamsburg.
