It’s the season for centuries-old holiday cheer. Families and friends are invited to celebrate Christmastide in Virginia and join in the festive spirit.
Visitors can explore 17th- and 18th-century holiday traditions through lively interpretive programs, fancy cooking, caroling, and musical entertainment. Festivities take place at both museums, open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Christmas Day), with immersive galleries leading to hands-on activities in outdoor settings inspired by early Virginia.
At a Continental Army encampment and Revolution-era farm, guests can hear stories of Christmas and winter during the Revolutionary War. Learn how soldiers prepared rations in an earthen kitchen, watch flintlock musket demonstrations, and discover how the season was observed during wartime.
On the farm, decorated with greenery, historical interpreters compare 18th-century holiday traditions with modern ones, demonstrate open-hearth cooking, and show how a farmhouse table was set for a holiday feast. Visitors can also join in by making traditional holiday pomanders with cloves and oranges.
Enjoy festive holiday musical performances at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
