Engaging Students in Historical Thinking Skills
March 2 – April 13, 2026
FREE
Join the Bob and Marion Wilson Teacher Institute at Colonial Williamsburg for an exclusive online teacher training course this spring! This course provides educators with practical historical thinking strategies they can use to encourage student engagement with primary sources and inquiry-based instruction. Participants will work with Colonial Williamsburg educators, interpreters, and historians to learn how to apply these strategies by learning about the lives of past individuals from the colonial and revolutionary periods.
Combining asynchronous learning with live sessions, this course offers flexibility for busy educators. Participants should expect around five to eight hours of self-paced work per week and two-hour live class meetings to be held March 4, March 11, and March 18 at 7:00 PM EST. Teachers of all grade levels are welcome, though the course is primarily designed for upper elementary and middle school educators. We encourage learners to register even if they are unable to attend all the live class meetings. Participants will receive professional development hours based on the components of the course they complete.
