Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic 250th Anniversary Celebration: Tips Before You Go!

Colonial Williamsburg has been preparing for the Historic 250th Anniversary and July 4th Celebration, and the festivities will be among the most memorable in its history. The weekend, which kicks off on Thursday July 2, features world-class performers, special events, and family-friendly programming and patriotic celebrations, see the most up to date list of activities.

Visitors will view the largest display of fireworks in Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s history. Fireworks will launch simultaneously from two locations: Governor’s Palace & Colonial Williamsburg Golf Course. For the first time ever a drone show is incorporated into the celebration. Be sure to check the latest schedule of events before you visit, for updates on some programming and event details.

The forecast for the weekend includes extreme heat warning, making it one more thing visitors should plan before arriving. A little preparation can go a long way to ensuring a safe and enjoyable day.

Here are some helpful tips to make the most of your visit to Colonial Williamsburg:

  • BEST way to get UP TO THE MINUTE information is to Text CWEVENTS to 226787. You will receive weather and event information immediately.
  • Cooling tents set up in three locations: across from the Palace Green, Courthouse Green and the south side of the Capital
  • Water stations set up throughout to fill water bottles
  • Pack light – bring only what you need and can carry comfortably
  • Coolers permitted (don’t leave unattended)
  • You can save your spot on the Lawn of the Governor’s Palace with blankets and chairs but don’t leave unattended bags.
  • Cool off and watch the Nations Builders Programs running at the Kimball Theater
  • Food trucks will be on Nickolson Street on Courthouse Green and Blair Street
  • See list of prohibited items

Parking is at a premium in Colonial Williamsburg

  • There is parking at the Visitor Center (101 Visitor Center Drive).
  • FREE overflow parking is at Zable Stadium at William & Mary (100 Stadium Drive) and Kaplan Arena (751 Ukrop Way).
  • Free shuttle busses will be running from Williamsburg Community Chapel (3899 John Tyler Highway) from noon to 11 pm.
  • Paid Parking Rates have been updated – Colonial Williamsburg does not receive any Federal Funding and the event is free but there are event parking prices on some lots. SEE HERE

The July 4th celebration at will be broadcast live on PBS from 8 – 10 pm ET with a national rebroadcast from 10 pm – midnight ET. The entire show will repeat again on July 5th.
