Library Card Sign-Up Month: Get Your WRL Card & Win Prizes this September
Williamsburg Regional Library (WRL) is celebrating Library Card Sign-up Month this September with prizes for new and current cardholders and a reminder that some of the library’s most valuable resources are available free with a WRL card.
From Sept. 1-30, new library cardholders will receive a token to use in a library gumball machine stocked with WRL-themed prizes, including 3D-printed colonial houses and WRL 250th pins, stickers and totes. Current cardholders can get in on the fun, too, by entering a raffle each week.
More than 46,000 people across Williamsburg, James City County, and York County already have WRL cards, giving them access to far more than books. Among the resources available free with a WRL card are:
- Educational toys, technology, games, and puzzles through WRL’s Learning to Go collection
- Nearly 50 research databases
- Online access to The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal
- Free admission to more than a dozen museums and cultural attractions through WRL’s Explore Virginia Passes program
- Wi-Fi hotspots available for checkout
- Reading challenges with prizes for kids, teens and adults
“A library card may be small, but what it gives you access to is enormous,” said Library Director Sandy Towers. “It can help a child learn, give a family a free day at a museum, connect someone to the internet or put trusted news and research at your fingertips. That’s what we want people to discover this September: just how much is available to them with a WRL card.”
Held each September since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a national initiative of the American Library Association encouraging people to discover the resources available through their local libraries.
To sign up, visit either WRL location, stop by a WRL Bookmobile or apply online at wrl.org. WRL library cards are free to residents and local government employees in Williamsburg, James City County and York County, as well as William & Mary students, faculty and staff; teachers at WJCC and York County schools; and individuals who own property or businesses in one of those jurisdictions.
WRL cards expire periodically. To get a new card or ensure an existing card is up to date, visit the circulation desk at either the Williamsburg Library or James City County Library with a state- or government-issued photo ID or proof of address.
