Virginia BBQ Championships, Aug. 23, 2014 – Hampton Coliseum

The first official barbeque competition in Virginia is set for August 23 at the Hampton Coliseum. The Virginia BBQ Championships are part of the Southern Fried Festival, a 2-day event that also includes a car show and an outdoor music festival.

Admission to the Virginia BBQ Championships is $15, Military/Veteran admission is $12, children’s tickets are $6 (ages 7-12) and children under 6 are free. Admission grants access to the car show, outdoor music festival and the bbq competition.

The 2014 Virginia BBQ Championship categories are: beef brisket, pork ribs, chicken and pork. Contestants will begin cooking the night before and judging will begin at noon. The award ceremony start at 3 p.m. Prizes include cash prizes, ribbons and trophies. The grand champion for the amateurs will win $300 and the professionalgrand champion will win $2,500.

Vendors on site to cure everyone’s ‘que cravings. Spectators will have the chance to talk with competitors and pick up some tricks of the trade to bring to their own summer barbeques.

Sandy Fulton, event organizer for the VA BBQ Championships,is extremely excited about the upcoming battle of ‘que.  “It is very exciting to have a sanctioned contest by the Kansas City BBQ Society.  BBQ fans are going to see some of the best BBQ competitors in the Country.  The highest score Virginia competitor will have the opportunity to compete in the Jack Daniels Tournament in October in Tennessee and have the chance of being the National Champion,” says Fulton. “We encourage people attending to talk to the competitors and find out more about their rubs or their sauces, and just how they got interested in competing.”

Additional attractions at the Southern Fried Festival are the VA Car Show and the outdoor Southern Fried Music Festival featuring rising country artists. The VA Car Show will have hundreds of hot rods, classics, pro streets, modern muscles, motorcycles and 4x4s. The outdoor music festival will feature Celeste Kellogg, Pork McElhinny and Amber Leigh.
