Youth Events:
May 13 & 14- Baby Lapsit Storytime Baby Lapsit Storytime is a storytime program especially for babies from birth to 18 months and their caregivers. This storytime includes 15 minutes of songs, fingerplays, and lap games. This storytime will feature the same songs and activities every week; this repetition of rhymes and songs forms a foundation for learning for your baby and strengthens the language connections in the brain.

May 13 & 14 – Baby Stay and Play Stay after storytime or just come in for the playdate to chat with other caregivers while your baby has fun with our toy collection. On the first Monday and Tuesday of each month, experts from Child Development Resources will join us to answer your questions about your baby’s development.

May 13, May 15 & 16 – Preschool Storytime Preschool Storytime is a program designed for preschoolers from 3 to 5 years old and their caregivers featuring stories, rhymes, songs, fingerplays, and other activities.

May 15 – Tween Game Day Drop in for board games and Nintendo Switch video games including Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mario Kart 8, and more. For ages 9-12. 5:30-7:30 PM -Williamsburg Library
May 18 – WRL Bookmobile Funfest: Roller Coaster and Trains Come learn about potential and kinetic energy. Become roller coaster engineers and harness the power of gravity to create a marble roller coaster with loops and jumps. Also, discover magnetic levitation trains – trains without wheels. Additional fun S.T.E.A.M activities will be available for your enjoyment. Ice cream and other snacks will be served at noon. 10 AM – 1 PM – Abram Frink Jr. Community Center
May 18 – Virginia Symphony Orchestra Family Chamber Music Show A brass ensemble (Trumpet, Horn, Trombone and Tuba) presents an interactive specialty program for young people, including a performance and question and answer session. 11 AM – Williamsburg Library Theatre
May 18 & 19- Colonial Heritage Model Railroad Display & National Train Day Celebration Join The Colonial Heritage Model Railroad Club for a Train Day celebration with trains running on their 20 module HO display, the Yarmouth Creek and Western Railroad, created by members of the Club. Follow trains around the display, through mountains and towns. A challenge will be to locate 12 hidden objects placed somewhere on the display. For those who find at least 10 items, you’ll receive an Official Inspectors Card. Plus visit the Norge Depot‘s Open House celebration. The Depot is filled with railroad artifacts and includes a model railroad. A Docent will be available to answer questions. May 18 from 10 AM – 4 PM and May 19 from 1-4 PM – James City County Library & Norge Depot
Open Art Studio Come paint, draw, create, and explore with a variety of materials in the Open Art Studio. James City County Library

Daily – Come Play at the Kiwanis Kids Idea Studio! Come in from the cold to the James City County Library. Play in a vibrant, engaging area that focuses on the twin literacy skills of reading and play. The Kiwanis Kids Idea Studio integrates our collection with children’s museum-style elements including air tubes, an interactive floor, a giant tablet table, and more! James City County Library
Daily – Story Trail Take a walk outdoors and read a story at the James City County Library’s Story Trail. We invite families to walk from page to page in the green space behind the library. All Day – James City County Library

May25 – SLAM Poetry Connections Join us for SLAM Connection, a program to develop poets as writers and performers. Learn about observation, writing, and performance in a safe, judgment-free space where people can learn about life in other people’s shoes. For ages 13+. 2-4 PM – Williamsburg Library
Daily — NEW Teen Room at the James City County Library Check out the brand-new teen room at the James City County Library! This room features fun tech including virtual reality headsets, Nintendo Switches, an arcade game table, and lounge seating. For ages 13-18.
Adult:
May 14 – Cricut 101 Learn the basics of how the Cricut works and the different things you can make. For ages 13+. No registration required. 2 PM – Williamsburg Library
May 15 – Maternal and Infant Health Topics for Families Join us for a presentation by the Hampton & Peninsula Health Districts – Hampton Health Department on maternal and infant health. Topics include maternal mental health, oral health during pregnancy and infancy, doulas, child safety seats, safe sleep guidelines, and immunizations. 2 PM – Stryker Center
May 16- Open Mic Quarterly Showcase Join us for an evening of poetry and other live performances from singers, musicians, and comedians. Sign-ups to perform start at 4:30 pm. 5 PM – Williamsburg Library Theatre
May 16- Everything You Wanted to Know about Foster Care But Were Afraid to Ask Curious about becoming a foster family for local kids in need? Want to know how you can support foster families and kids in foster care? Have no idea where to start asking questions about this key resource? Now is the time to find out! May is National Foster Care Month! Join Karen Goins, Resource Program Coordinator for James City County’s Social Services, to get all your questions answered. 6 PM – Williamsburg Library
May 19 – Writer’s Club: Mastering Character Dialogue in Your Novel Do you struggle with making dialogue sound natural? Do you find it challenging to give each of your characters a distinct voice? In this practical writing workshop, you’ll discover how dialogue can advance your plot and influence the pacing of your chapters. 2 PM – Stryker Center
May 24 – Members of Apollo’s Fire Baroque “The Coffeehouses of 1610” The GRAMMY-winning musicians of Apollo’s Fire invite you back to 1610, when the “wall” between art music and popular music barely existed. In this musical tour of pubs and parlors, we hear how great composers of London, Venice, and Madrid wrote artful variations on popular street tunes. Tickets available for purchase at the Virginia Arts Festival website. 10:30 AM – Williamsburg Library Theatre
Makerspace Open! Check out our new creative space at the Williamsburg Library. Explore 3D printers, Glowforge 3D laser printer, Cricut, and sewing machines during walk-in hours. Read more about the Makerspace. Walk-in hours: Mon-Thurs: 1 – 7 PM, Fri: 1 PM – 5 PM, Sun & Sun: 1 – 4 PM.
