The Search for Headwaters: Mapping River Exploration in Early Virginia

Friday, September 11, 2026
Watermen’s Museum

How did the English newcomers make sense of this unfamiliar territory?

When English colonists arrived at Roanoke Island in 1585 and Jamestown in 1607, they launched exploratory voyages to locate the headwaters of coastal rivers. From outposts near the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, they ventured upriver to find their sources in distant mountains, seeking gold deposits and a water passage to Asia while engaging with the Indigenous population of the Chesapeake region.

This free public program will be presented in the Museum’s education building. Parking is available in either of the museum parking lots. There will be a lite reception from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. This event is sponsored by Celebrate Yorktown Committee. More Info
