Show Description

An inspector calls on an eminently respectable British family for a routine inquiry in connection with the suicide of a young girl. Before the evening is over, the formerly friendly and close-knit family members reveal themselves to be selfish, cowardly and perhaps even guilty.

Cast of 2 female & 4 male

Character Roles

Arthur Birling
Gender: Male
Playing Age: 50s
Description: The patriarch of the Birling family and a prosperous manufacturer. He is pompous, heavy-looking, and completely lacking in self-awareness or social responsibility. He is driven by wealth, status, and self-interest.

Sybil Birling
Gender: Female
Playing Age: 50s
Description: Arthur’s wife and his social superior. She is aristocratic, cold, and fiercely protective of her family’s social standing. She is rigidly unyielding and entirely lacks empathy for those outside her class.

Sheila Birling
Gender: Female
Playing Age: Early to mid-20s
Description: The Birlings’ daughter, recently engaged to Gerald. She begins the play playful, privileged, and slightly vain, but undergoes the most profound moral transformation. The actor must have a strong emotional range to bridge the gap from naive entitlement to deep remorse.

Eric Birling
Gender: Male
Playing Age: Early to mid-20s
Description: The Birlings’ son. Described as “half shy, half assertive,” Eric is deeply uneasy in his own skin and in his family dynamic. He carries a heavy burden of guilt and relies heavily on alcohol to cope.

Gerald Croft
Gender: Male
Playing Age: 30s
Description: Sheila’s fiancé and the son of Birling’s chief business rival. He is attractive, smooth, well-bred, and highly confident. He is a “man-about-town” who easily hides his moral failings and double life behind excellent manners and societal approval.

Inspector Goole
Playing Age: 40s–60s
Description: The mysterious catalyst of the play. The Inspector does not necessarily need to be physically large, but The Inspector must naturally command the stage with an undeniable aura of massiveness, solidity, and purpose. The Inspector is unflappable, authoritative, and speaks with moral weight
