August Sales Tax Holiday: School Supplies and Clothing
When: First full weekend of August (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) each year. Virginia’s Sales Tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, August 2, and ending at 11:59 p.m., Sunday, August 4.
What’s Exempt: During the sales tax holiday, you can buy qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and Energy Star™ and WaterSense™ products without paying sales tax. Purchases of qualifying school supplies selling for $20 or less per item, and purchases of qualifying clothing and footwear selling for $100 or less per item will be exempt from sales tax. Clothing means anything from baby clothing to jackets and shoes. Retailers may also choose to absorb the tax on other items during the holiday period, but they are responsible for paying the tax on those items to the Department of Taxation.
