Youth Events:
May 6 & 7- Baby Lapsit Storytime Baby Lapsit Storytime is a storytime program especially for babies from birth to 18 months and their caregivers. This storytime includes 15 minutes of songs, fingerplays, and lap games. This storytime will feature the same songs and activities every week; this repetition of rhymes and songs forms a foundation for learning for your baby and strengthens the language connections in the brain.

May 6 & 7 – Baby Stay and Play Stay after storytime or just come in for the playdate to chat with other caregivers while your baby has fun with our toy collection. On the first Monday and Tuesday of each month, experts from Child Development Resources will join us to answer your questions about your baby’s development.

May 6, May 8 & 9 – Preschool Storytime Preschool Storytime is a program designed for preschoolers from 3 to 5 years old and their caregivers featuring stories, rhymes, songs, fingerplays, and other activities.

May 7 – Cena con Cuentos Storytime program for Spanish-speaking families: Cena con Cuentos es un programa de lectura en español para familias hispanohablantes con niños de 0 a 10 años de edad. Cada vez habrán actividades, leeremos cuentos, y disfrutarán de una deliciosa cena para toda la familia. La participación es gratuita. May 8 – Paws to Read with K-9 Connection Learn STEAM concepts, problem solving, and the engineering process while you build with LEGO®, in another installment of our LEGO® Education SPIKE series. For kids in grades K-5. Pick up a ticket at the Children’s Desk starting 30 minutes before the program to reserve your spot. 2:00 PM – James City County Library
May 11 – Preschool Dance Party What do you get when you add balloons and bubbles to music? A fantastic preschool dance party! Put on your dancing shoes and join us for an exciting hour of songs, movement, rhymes, and just plain fun. Parents, it’s a great time for you to share your best moves with your little ones as well. 11 AM – Stryker Center
May 11 – Sensory Movie: The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) Enjoy a special movie screening of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in a sensory-friendly environment. The lights will be on, the movie volume turned down, and attendees are free to move around, and dance, walk, and sing. Fidgets and some inflatable chairs will be available. Enjoy some popcorn or bring your own snacks. This showing is geared toward those with special needs or young children, but everyone is welcome to attend. May 12 – Beanbag Book Club – This month’s youngest book is Shermy & Shake: The Not-So-Nice Neighbor by Kirby Larson. We’ll read, craft, and play games to celebrate the coming of summer. Includes a copy of the book to keep. Space is limited; pick up a free ticket at the children’s desk beginning 30 minutes before the program begins. For ages 5 – 8. 1:30 PM – James City County Library

Daily – Come Play at the Kiwanis Kids Idea Studio! Come in from the cold to the James City County Library. Play in a vibrant, engaging area that focuses on the twin literacy skills of reading and play. The Kiwanis Kids Idea Studio integrates our collection with children’s museum-style elements including air tubes, an interactive floor, a giant tablet table, and more! James City County Library
Daily – Story Trail Take a walk outdoors and read a story at the James City County Library’s Story Trail. We invite families to walk from page to page in the green space behind the library. All Day – James City County Library

May 9 – Super Smash Tournament Show your skills in a Super Smash tournament. First place takes home a prize! For ages 9-18. No registration required. 5-7:30 PM – Williamsburg Library
May 12 – Teen Open Painting Enjoy a relaxing afternoon painting with other teens. For ages 13-18. No registration required. 2-4 PM – James City County Library
Daily — NEW Teen Room at the James City County Library Check out the brand-new teen room at the James City County Library! This room features fun tech including virtual reality headsets, Nintendo Switches, an arcade game table, and lounge seating. For ages 13-18.
Adult:
May 7 – Glowforge Laser Box – See how the precision cutting of the Glowforge laser can be used to make boxes. We’ll cut and assemble a box that’s the perfect size to hold your sticky notes and talk about the other ways the Glowforge can be used. For ages 13+. May 8 – English Conversation Café Join us for weekly relaxed conversation to practice and improve your English skills. Newcomers always welcome. For ages 16+. 6:30 PM – Williamsburg Library
May 9- Star in a Bottle: The Promises and Challenges of Nuclear Fusion In this talk, Ryan Chaban, recent Physics PhD from William & Mary, will explain the science of nuclear fusion, from the quantum level to the macroscale plasma physics involved. Learn about the remaining engineering and technological hurdles to potentially making fusion a sustainable and safe energy source. Ryan will discuss the future of fusion while examining the way the world is reacting to this technology and its possibilities. 2 PM – Stryker Center
May 4 – Sewing Saturday: Zippers Learn how to sew in a zipper. The project of the day is a lined zipper pouch. Beginner sewers welcome. May 11 – Backgammon Club Players of all levels are invited to join a casual group to roll the dice in the popular game of strategy and luck. WRL will have a couple of boards on hand, but if you have one, bring your own backgammon board. 10 AM – 12 PM – Williamsburg Library
Makerspace Open! Check out our new creative space at the Williamsburg Library. Explore 3D printers, Glowforge 3D laser printer, Cricut, and sewing machines during walk-in hours. Read more about the Makerspace. Walk-in hours: Mon-Thurs: 1 – 7 PM, Fri: 1 PM – 5 PM, Sun & Sun: 1 – 4 PM.
