VIMS Marine Science Day
Marine Science Day – Saturday, June 10, 2023
10 a.m.-3 p.m.
VIMS Marine Science Day is fun and educational for all ages. Visitors can examine high-tech science equipment, tour a laboratory, collect and observe aquatic animals in the York River, and discover the importance of wetlands in VIMS’ Teaching Marsh. A cooking demonstration, mini-lectures, and hands-on activities take place throughout the day Advanced registration is encouraged!

Timed Programs
10:30 – 10:45 – Costume Contest Check-in
11:00 – 11:30 – Marine Life Costume Parade and Awards Ceremony
12:00 – 1:00 – Seafood Cooking Demo by Wade O’Neill, Culinary Arts Faculty with Hampton City Schools. Seating is limited.
12:30 – 1:30 – Marine-Related Career Fair in the Hargis Library (sponsored by Bank of America)
1:10 – 1:20 – 10 Minute Talk: The Basics on Blue Crab Biology by Dr. Jeff Shields, VIMS Professor
1:30 – 1:40 – 10 Minute Talk: Diel Vertical Migration: The Ocean’s Greatest Game of Hide-and-Seek by Tor Mowatt-Larssen, VIMS PhD student
1:30 – 2:30 – Seafood Cooking Demo by Wade O’Neill, Culinary Arts Faculty with Hampton City Schools. Seating is limited.
1:50 – 2:00 – 10 Minute Talk: Where Do 400,000 Fishes Go? by Susanna Musick, VIMS Marine Recreation Specialist



Costume Contest: All ages are invited to participate in the MSD 2023 Costume Constest by wearing original costumes of marine plants or animals. Awards will be given for:
- most original plant or animal
- most creative use of sustainable materials
- best group costume
- best representation of a plant or animal
- grand prize. Grand Prize winner receives store merchandise valued at $50 from the VIMS Gift Shop.
