Governor’s Musick in the Wythe Parlor
📅Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays (June – Sep.)
🕞11 AM – 1 PM
📍George Wythe House
Music lessons played an important role in the education of young ladies and gentlemen in the 18th century. Skill in music helped one shine in polite company and, for young women especially, was often seen as an accomplishment that could improve marriage prospects. Music masters offered lessons in homes and rented spaces to those who could afford the leisure of musical study.
Visit the parlor of the Wythe House to enjoy popular domestic music performed or sung by members of the Governor’s Musick, much like Williamsburg’s gentry once experienced. Guests are invited to ask questions about the music and instruments or simply listen and imagine what George Wythe and his young protégé and boarder, Thomas Jefferson, may have heard within these walls.
Colonial Williamsburg admission required. For more information, see here.
