Ovarian Cancer Memorial Run

For more information on the race, go to http://www.hareandtortoiserunwalk.com/

The tortoise is slow and steady but wins the race – Ovarian Cancer is slow to detect but we can win the race. The tortoise is quiet – Ovarian Cancer is the quiet cancer – it whispers – don’t let it beat you.”

Why participate in this walk/run?
The run raises money to fund Ovarian Cancer screening and testing programs for under-insured and un-insured women, of all ages, who reside in the greater Williamsburg community. Since the first Race in 2009, over $142,000 has been donated to help fund the Ovarian Cancer Programs offered by the Lackey Free Family Clinic  and the Olde Towne Medical Center to  screen, treat and educate women about the disease. The programs have diagnosed many women in early stage Ovarian Cancer. These women were treated successfully for the disease because of an early stage diagnosis. The Race is the only comprehensive effort on the peninsula that is dedicated to this mission.

Facts about Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian Cancer is the deadliest gynecologic cancer and is the 5th leading cause of cancer deaths among American women. Ovarian Cancer rates are the highest in women aged 55-64 and the median age at which women are diagnosed is 63. No routine screening test exists to detect Ovarian Cancer.

Approximately 1 in 58 American women will be diagnosed with the disease during their lifetime.

Only 19% of Ovarian cases are diagnosed at an early stage – when treatment can make a huge difference.

15,000 American women will die from the disease in 2019.
