York County Schools will be remote for the first 9 weeks (UPDATE dates released for some elementary students to return)

UPDATE 9/14/20 — There are now target dates for certain students to return to school, according to a letter to families sent on Monday, September 14, from Superintendent Dr. Victor Shandor. The division is working towards pre-K through first grade students returning to school by Oct. 5. Under the plan, second and third-graders would return by Oct. 19. Remaining grades will be determined as a later date. Administrators say this gradual return will allow for any necessary adjustments.  All dates could change based on COVID-19 numbers. York County Schools will be remote for first 9 weeks

On Thursday, July 30th the school board amended the superintendent’s recommendation to begin the school year remotely for the first nine weeks.

They will work towards bringing the most vulnerable and youngest students back earlier than nine weeks.

A letter sent to York County families from Division Superintendent, Victor Shandor, Ed.D. on Friday, July 24th recommended that York County School Division begin the 2020-21 school year, on September 8, in a Remote Learning Model. The concern is that bringing together large populations of people in an indoor location increases the potential spread of the virus and the possibility of school closings. The recommendation came after months of research, reviewing community health data and consulting with the local health department.

The school board stressed that parents and guardians need to complete the Family Commitment Form by the August 4th. That will help the division to develop schedules, plan transportation routes for students when they return to school, and provide students with technology for remote learning.

This decisions follows suit with James-City County Schools system decision which was announced earlier this week.
