The Marquis de Lafayette was a French aristocrat who volunteered to serve at his own expense under General Washington. In 1781, he was dispatched to Virginia to play a cat and mouse campaign against British General Lord Cornwallis, that would end with the allied victory at Yorktown in October 1781.
