🚴‍♀️ The Capital Trail is on the move—literally!

A major expansion is officially underway thanks to a landmark partnership between the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation (VCTF) and Tidewater Trails Alliance (TTA). Together, they’re bringing the Virginia Capital Trail straight into the heart of Colonial Williamsburg—and that’s just the beginning! 🎉

“This is a transformational moment for the Capital Trail and the region,” shares Cat Anthony, Executive
Director of the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation. “Expanding the Trail to Colonial Williamsburg has long
been a priority, and this partnership brings that vision within reach. It not only strengthens our ability to
deliver a high-quality trail experience, but also moves us closer to creating a fully connected network
linking Richmond to the heart of Hampton Roads.”

📍 What’s happening?
This exciting project adds 7.5 miles of new trail connecting Jamestown High School to South England Street, laying the groundwork for future connections to TRAIL757 and building a seamless trail experience across the region.

💰 Estimated cost: $25–$33 million
🌐 Branded: As an official extension of the Virginia Capital Trail

🚦 Why it matters:

  • Strengthens regional connectivity
  • Expands access to safe, active transportation
  • Boosts local economy
  • Encourages healthier, more sustainable lifestyles

“We are excited to collaborate with VCTF to bring this shared vision to life,” said Reed Nester, Chair of the
Tidewater Trails Alliance. “This agreement amplifies our collective efforts and marks the next step toward
a safe, accessible, and connected trail system that supports long-term economic vitality across the
region.”

🧭 Who’s leading the charge?
The VCTF will take the reins on planning and advocacy with a full-time project lead, collaborating closely with local and state partners. TTA, the grassroots force behind TRAIL757 since 2018, will continue its mission to grow trail networks across the Peninsula and South Hampton Roads.
