Celebrate the summer solstice by joining James City County Parks & Recreation for Project: FiveFortySeven, the Longest Day of Play!

June 20 is the longest day of the year. JCC Parks and Recreation will have events staring with the rise and shine sun at 5:47 a.m. They are offering free recreational activities and outdoor adventures all day including free access to their outdoor pools, free use of the Recreation Centers, free select group fitness classes and so much more!  BUT!!!!! a few of them require registration by June 17 so they have a head count – they are still FREE make sure to read the events below and if you have to register – make sure to REGISTER!!

Come explore a new park or tryout out a new activity! Below is the 2024 event schedule – all are first-come, first-served! Please note, programs are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather or lack of minimum registration levels. Free Amenity & Facility Access!

8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. 
Bike Rentals ▪ All Ages*; 15 & younger with parent/guardian
The James City County Marina’s close proximity to the Colonial Parkway, Historic Jamestown, Jamestown Beach Event Park and the Virginia Capital Trail make it the perfect location to start a leisurely bike ride. Bikes are available first come, first served from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Photo Identification is required for all rentals.

Paddlecraft Rentals ▪ All Ages; 15 & younger with parent/guardian
Enjoy free paddlecraft rentals at two of our waterfront parks. Available rentals include single and tandem kayaks, standup paddleboards (James City County Marina only) and canoes. Paddlecraft are available first come, first served during normal operating hours and include life jackets. Hours at the James City County Marina are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Chickahominy Riverfront Park are 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Photo Identification is required for all rentals.

 *Renters must be age 18 or older, or have a guardian age 18 or older sign the waiver. Children ages 5-12 are permitted only on tandem kayak and canoe with a guardian age 18 or older.

Free Outdoor Pool Access ▪ All Ages
We are waiving our pool fees for the day! Enjoy free pool access for everyone at both outdoor pools. Take note below of the after-hours pool party taking place at Chickahominy Riverfront Park Pool from 6-8 p.m. Ages 11 & younger require a parent or guardian onsite. Free Centers Access ▪ Ages 13 +; 12 & younger with parent/guardian
Come visit one or both of our recreation centers, James City County Recreation Center (JCCRC) and Abram Frink Community Center (AFCC). We are waiving our daily access fees so that non-members can take advantage of amenity access to both centers. Enjoy access to the basketball courts, fitness areas, JCCRC pool and more during normal operating hours (JCCRC – 6 a.m.-9 p.m. or AFCC – 4-9 p.m.).

Park Scavenger Hunt ▪ All Ages
Visit Warhill Sports Complex to find the eight hidden cutout suns throughout the park. Scan the QR code to answer the trivia question for an entry into a raffle prize pack including T-shirts, P&R swag and more. Each sun has a unique QR code; find all eight and you get 10 times the raffle entries!

Instagram Park Pic Contest ▪ All Ages
Out & about between June 20-23? You may discover some fun summertime displays. Snap a photo, tag us on social media or email us at parks.rec@jamescitycountyva.gov; you’ll be entered to win our summer fun prize pack (JCC swag, beach toys, kite, etc.). The winner will be announced on Monday, June 24. Locations include Abram Frink Community Center, Greensprings Interpretive Trail, James City County Recreation Center, James City County Marina and Veterans Park.

Show the Love, JCC ▪ All Ages
Residents are encouraged to “show the love” for JCC by visiting our LOVE sign at Freedom Park, taking a photo and adding it to the pinned post on Facebook (or tag us in your Instagram or Facebook story); photos will be used in future marketing/promotions. While in the park, you can purchase our love sign stickers or magnets or visit the Williamsburg Botanical Garden and Freedom Park Arboretum, Free Black Settlement or take a stroll on our trails!

Sensory Bags ▪ All Ages
Sensory bags are available to check out with a special Sensory Scavenger Hunt in celebration of the Longest Day of Play. Bags are available at the Abram Frink Community Center, Chickahominy Riverfront Park, Freedom Park, James City County Recreation Center and Veterans Park during normal operating hours.

Celebrate National Pollinator Week ▪ All Ages; 12 & younger with parent/guardian
Come join us at Veterans Park Pollinator Garden as we learn about the different types of pollinators and what we can do to attract and protect them.  There will be plenty of family-friendly activities, including games, exhibits, crafts and take-home projects for kids of all ages.

Pickleball Pop Up ▪ All Ages 
Courts will be reserved for beginners to come to learn about the basic rules and playing fundamentals. There will be a certified instructor on site available to help with any instruction or answer any questions.

Imagine holding up your favorite object in sunlight and then drawing around its shadow on the ground. That’s shadow art! During this community-wide art project, you can create your own masterpiece while making friends. No experience is needed.

Music in the Park with Gary Garlic  All Ages
Join Gary Garlic as he gives a musical demonstration that charts a course in history and cultural awareness. Students will learn how the outlawing of drums on many Caribbean islands led to people innovating and inventing instruments from steel, resulting in a unique sound as they claimed their independence and developed an art form all their own.

Trackless Train Rides

Join us for an after-hours pool party. Enjoy free pool access, treats and music for all ages while we extend the Longest Day of Play.

Sunrise Yoga ▪ Ages 14+; 13 & younger with parent/guardian
Begin your day aligning your body and breathing in the fresh air with your toes in the sand. Bring a yoga mat or a beach towel. All levels are welcome. Registration required.

Cycle & Core ▪ Ages 14+
Two in one! Challenge your cardio with 30 minutes of spin sets and end the class with 20 minutes of core stability. All levels are welcome. Registration required

Jamestown Discovery Boat Tour ▪ All Ages
Enjoy the sights and sounds along the James River. The pontoon boat provides guests with an amazing view from the vessel. Registration required.

Sunset Park Tour ▪ All Ages; 16 & younger with parent/guardian
We’ll be touring the most popular parks around the County. Learn about amenities, rentals and access points to play your way! The tour will depart from the James City County Recreation Center.  Registration required.

Family Zumba ▪ Ages 14+; 13 & younger with parent/guardian
Family Zumba gets the whole family moving and making memories to fun music! Enjoy a perfect blend of dance, fitness and fun. Registration required.

7-8 p.m.
Candlelight Yin Yoga  ▪ Ages 14+
A perfect way to end your day. This class, set in a soothing candlelight environment, focuses on poses that promote relaxation and restoration through the use of yoga props. You will learn tools to help relieve the effects of chronic stress and decompress after your day. Registration required.

REC Connect & Teens on Point (T.O.P)
These two summer camp programs are excited to participate in this year’s Project: FiveFortySeven and Play All Day VA initiative. All five site locations will engage in field day activities at the Warhill Sports Complex. Activities will include flag football, water play, tug-of-war and much more! You must be registered for REC Connect or T.O.P and be sure to register your child for the first week of summer camp to Play All Day! Learn more.
